Photographing artwork

How do you photograph your paintings? It seems like everytime I try to do this with mine, they are always too dark even with flash, and the paper (which is white) looks beige. I've tried lightening the image, but it doesn't seem to work well. Thanks!

Not the camera as much as it is the lighting. camera (phone) should be centered on and parallel to the painting. Equal lighting from left and right (pointing at painting). No other lighting.
