Painting size

This question is likely more for @Olly Pyle but anyone can help me. I looked at Olly’s book and decided to determine what size his paintings are. Most common is 50x34 cm. Also 72x52 cm. Based upon the way the paintings are presented, I cannot tell if they have borders. I am assuming they are done in stretched watercolor paper, and that the noted size is the finished image. Given that assumption, what was the starting size of the piece of paper? How much was lost to the gummed tape? Was a masking tape then applied for a white border?

I have always worked from blocks, but would like to start painting larger. That seems to dictate stretched paper.

Thanks for any and all help.

So you lose around 1cm off each edge. I presume you leave it taped to the board while painting. To get a white border, you put masking tape around the edge? Or maybe you don’t bother and just assume it will get matted?

Thank you both for responding.
