Winter Walk

Inspired by a colleagues photo. For this sunset I used a wonderful colour - new gamboge - which is lovely golden yellow, I mixed it in various ways with ultramarine, cobalt blue, raw and burnt sienna to make all the autumnal browns and greens and to add light from the sunset into the path and bushes and emphasise the focal point. This is a large painting, A2, which allows me to free up my brush strokes and play fast and loose (Ron Ranson style) with the washes. I also applied Rons Credit card scraper technique to create texture in the trunks and add small branches here and there. To the right i used a little derwent pastel pencil in the trunks. Fabriano Artistico 100% cotton 300gm.

I completely agree with you, Kirsten, regarding your comments on pigments. Obviously, it is good to use the best materials you can afford, but I do feel one can attach more importance to the materials than the actual painting. Incidentally, I also have a tube of new gamboge I have never used - hmmm?

Apologies to Paul, didn't intend to hijack your post 🙏.
