Shadow play on a fence

This painting is all about the rhythm of light and shade hitting trees behind a long fence. I used lots of raw sienna, yellow ochre and burnt umber along with a DS colour lavender, which I dropped into shadows. This is painted on the backside of Saunders waterford hot press. I love the gentle grainy texture it has.

This is a beautiful study of light and shadow! I admire the way the light comes through the fence and the way the shadows actually provide contour to the pavement. The two different crops of the same painting are very interesting. Personally I prefer the larger horizontal format as it provides more background to set off the trees.
