Out and about

Finally the weather has improved. Ive been out painting and sketching. I enjoy working at home from my own photos taken in the day (the trampoline), but nothing beats the energy of trying to capture the moment (sundown) outside on the spot. And as Edo says, drawing is the key to everything. I try to draw every day ( plein air sketches below).

Yes I was excited to make that loose painting, I had been sitting outside painting for a couple of hours and my efforts were hopeless, the dunes can be a difficult landscape to capture. Then with the sun in my eyes i just went for it in this final attempt and it made my trip worth it. It always takes me a while to stop trying to paint the actual scene in front of me (an impossible task), but just trying to capture the essence of the place and moment. After a few rubbish attempts I finally switch off my thinking head and just go with my intuition and get into the zone. Its a great feeling when It happens. I find though using this sketchbook instead of a block really helps as i can be less precious about it. I way way prefer the looser more direct response to a place, because its not just the painting but about the actual experience of a place.
