Paint in the light washes across the entire scene. Then the shadows in the trees that wrap around the road sign and above the road, across the road, under the car then down into the massive foreground shadow - prepare enough paint, in varying shades and treat that as one shape. Basically everything you see when you squint at the photo. Then add a few dark details here and there. I imagine the focal point is sort of in the middle distance looking down the road. This visual cohesion will give you a greater of calm.

Beautiful story and a rather accomplished painting I must say. I look forward to seeing more.

I wonder who the dog is waiting for or missing. Or is it like life's journey, leaving childhood behind. The road doesn't lead you into the picture as it starts out of frame, so there is this sense of being left behind. Its important to think about the story you are trying to tell in any image. Compositional considerations like this can be used to great effect. Curious.

Yes going in a second time always feels frustrating. Always use a stronger mix than you imagine as it will lighten when drying. Other than that there is a lovely impressionistic feeling in your painting, a combination of the deep shadows, reflections and dry brushwork. I'm excited to see more of your work.

Oh yes, you are getting rather good at this!! Sure you do need the masking marker but otherwise. You have a lovely light touch to your brushwork and your sense of color is very sophisticated. The energy in the trees is lovely and I can really feel the fisherman extending and casting his line. The water and how it blends into the foreground is gorgeous. Great work. I'm only sending this as I have tried lots of different ones and many aren't that good. This was the one that really does work. It achieves really fine lines. Another option is to buy a fine white chalk pastel pencil. it needs to be opaque and soft enough to create the line. Nothing wrong with mixing media if it works for you. Again different brands work in different ways, you will need to experiment. Final option is to just get really good with a rigger and gouache! Practice makes perfect!

What I have is a Fine Masking Marker, its like a ballpoint pen mine is a brand called Sol Goya by Kreul - its German, but you will probably have others over there. There is also a type of masking pen with a fine metal tube at the end - thats rubbish, dont buy it - it goes all over the place. With the marker - it has to be the fine one - you can apply it really finely. Then like Erik says perhaps just use a knife for a little sparkle here and there on the line, you can be more selective with it. Regards the foreground its perfect like it is, lovely colours. Leave it. Put a little more detail in the figure, make that the focal point, plus a few sharper reflections. Thats all you need to do. You definitely have something good happening here.

Nice negative painting of the trees - very good. One of these masking fluid fine pens would be perfect for your fishing lines. Ive used one for plane trails in the sky - it was perfect - posted here previously - then you wouldn't need to rip up the paper. Then think about adjusting the values behind the fishing line, so its a darker tone and the line will stand out more - its the focal point anyway so it would make sense. This will be a lot easier if you use masking fluid as you wont need to worry about it. Give the guy a red or turquiose hat to make him pop. Once I've removed the masking fluid and have the line, i then soften it in places with a damp small synthetic flat. You can also add a little tone. Masking fluid is a great thing to use sparingly in the right places, we shouldn't think that its not something we can utilize.

Yes, I understand, but you clearly have a very distinct calligraphy to you work, that over time could really become something special. In the short term a couple of rigger brushes will help! ;-)) So purely as a personal project, a diary could be a driver for you. Like a writer would say, its best to work on something you know about, so in your case fishing will prove an inexhaustible and wonderful subject matter. Interesting subject for discussion. When are we ever ready as artists? Its a continual process of self development. I also started around 3 years ago but I know that I want to be an artist, I'm a graphic designer by trade, but I've always had this feeling inside, I've been building up my Instagram presence purely to document my progress and I am now building a website to show/sell my work. Is it to soon? Arguably yes, but I'm 58 so why not, just do it, and I will continue to develop as the years go by.

Love your work, very loose and fresh. Why not make a 'fishermans diary' with illustrations - make a little book of it.

Woodfree paper is indeed a very different experience to cotton papers, its good to try them all out. Ive tried many and to my surprise I found I really like painting on hot press cotton paper. Montval was the worse, I just through it away it was so awful, but im sure for others its great. Get yourself a couple of thin springy synthetic riggers, they aren't expensive and great fun to paint with.

Charming sketch. It feels very unified. I like the sweep of the fishing line.

Very atmospheric. I think the foreground is good as it is, i wouldn't over do it with a rigger. less work in the trees with all the branches would have been better as well, just add a couple, its always better to understate things in watercolour - let the viewers imagination do the rest.

This is a lot better I think and the sea coming over the rocks feels very convincing. Quite an impressive feat I would say! Another improvement could be that rather than copy the dark values in the photo for the distant mountains to paint them lighter and bluer to show the aerial perspective. The camera has made them darker as the light from the waves is affecting the exposure.

I really love this! Love the composition. Full of movement and foreboding. You make a mark with your brush and leave it - that's how it stays looking so fresh. Being that brave makes all the difference. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

The surf in the sea would have been better painting negatively with a dry brush technique, a couple of simple horizontal strokes. As it is now it comes forward to much. The sea that flows onto the beach is fine with the detail. The rocks are rather beautiful and its a nice drawing as well.
