Sourcing Subjects

Of late, I've noticed that I 'm sourcing subjects for painting closer and closer to home, in fact, my latest subject is an old chapel less than 200 metres from home!

I'm lucky, in that I live in a fairly rural area so a walk can present a variety of potential subjects.

What I'm wondering is why am I drawn so much to these more local places recently? Some of which I've looked at hundreds, if not thousands of times in my life. Is it my age? (Though I'm still relatively fit), is it a desire to document the area I grew up in, before it disappears?

I still travel, and I still find subjects away from home, but the majority are local.

Where do others source their subjects? Are the majority local to you? Here, I'm speaking of places visited in person, not images sourced from others.

Sorry if this comes over as a bit of artistic navel gazing, but would be interested to read others thoughts.

To quote Marcel Proust, "The real voyage of discovery is not in seeing new landscapes, but in having new eyes".

Perhaps there is something in that!

Thanks for your patience.

Thank you for your reply Antonella. Yes, I do love nature in all it's forms, and it is with great sadness over my life that I've watched it get crowded out. The old buildings that I love to paint are disappearing also, the new buildings that replace them don't seem to belong in the landscape in the same way, but maybe they will one day.

Interesting comparison with the photo album, as something we are closely linked to and love.
