How do you document your artwork?

I guess this question is mainly for the professional members of the group, so I hope @Edo and @Olly can share of some of their wisdom on the subject!

Up until now I've just used my phone to take pictures of my paintings, but I don't have a good/fitting light source, nor a tripod or mount for my phone. Naturally, the pictures vary in quality, and requires a lot of after effects if they are to be in any way presentable in a forum like this.

How do the more experienced artists document their artwork? What kind of light and camera equipment do you use, and recommend for starters who want to take decent pictures of their work? Any tips and tricks for good, neutral, solid images will be very welcome!

I scan my paintings into my computer and then fiddle with the result until I am happy. I then have a record which I can print for gifts, greeting Cards for family etc. As most of my paintings are of historical houses in my village taken from old postcards and photos , they are a record for the Thriplow History Society.
