Titles for paintings?

I have 4 original paintings handed down through the family (3 watercolor and 1 oil) of scenes in Scotland executed in 1914 and 1920. None have attached titles. I have several signed and numbered watercolor prints of more recent vintage that have the title as well as the signature and print number in pencil along the bottom. So, I'm wondering, how or where is a title for an original painting normally recorded, or isn't it?

There actually is a topic somewhat wider than just where to put the title. I recently ran across the term "Certificate of Authenticity" and found a number of web sites that address this subject. The jacksonart.com site has a page that gives a lot of general information. Other sites actually provide forms that you can copy. The certificate, completed by the artist, conveys a great deal of information, including the title, about the work to which it is attached.
